The 7 Systems Every HENRY Needs to Build Real Wealth by 45

(Part 3 of our HENRY series)

High earners don’t need more spreadsheets—they need simple systems. Here are the seven financial systems every HENRY (High Earner Not Rich Yet) should have in place.

Imagine we’re at your kitchen table, spreading out your pay stubs, benefits info, and maybe a few receipts you swear you’ll organize someday. You look at me and say:

“I just want to know I’m doing the right things.”

Here’s the great news: You don’t have to be an Excel queen. You don’t need to track every coffee on an app. You certainly don’t need to turn managing your finances into yet another job.

You need seven simple systems that quietly build wealth in the background.

1. Automatic Savings System

Money moves to savings/investments before you can spend it. Pick an amount, set up auto transfer, ignore. Effort: zero. Impact: huge.

2. Investment Contribution System

A set-it-and-forget-it plan that keeps your future funded. Start with your 401k option. Set it to auto-increase with your pay increases until it’s maxed annually

3. Tax Optimization System

Because paying extra taxes is not a personality trait. Most young high earners get smacked on RSUs, ISOs and other “benefits” when they don’t pay attention to the taxes. Tax planning is a growing part of our business due to this problem.

4. Debt Management System

Strategic, not shame based. You’re not “bad” for having debt, you just need a plan. Not all debt is bad, but sometimes debt to the detriment of savings works against you.

5. Lifestyle Guardrail System

Enjoy your income without letting lifestyle creep eat your progress.

6. Emergency Fund System

Three to six months of breathing room so surprises don’t become crises. The average length of unemployment in the US is 90 days. Have enough saved for that or a sabbatical!

7. Annual Wealth Check‑In

A 90‑minute yearly meeting with yourself (or with me) to make sure everything is still aligned. (See our 90 Minute Annual Financial Review post)

When these systems are in place, wealth stops being a mystery and starts being a math problem, one you’re already capable of solving.
